Ryota Komatsu, a world-class bandoneon player who embodies the tango genre itself, has released an album commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Argentine tango master Astor Piazzolla. Ryota Komatsu has released Piazzolla’s works at every opportunity, but this time, as befits the 100th anniversary of Piazzolla’s birth, he releases a live recording of one of Piazzolla’s most famous pieces, the Bandoneon Concerto. This is from a New Japan Philharmonic concert in September 2019, conducted by Michel Plasson, a legendary incarnation of French music and a giant star with a reputation for his interpretation of tango music. The coupling features three Piazzolla pieces that Ryota Komatsu boldly took on before his debut. Ballad to Rocco” is a rare track that allows listeners to enjoy the voice of Aranko Fujisawa, an unheralded tango singer active in the Showa era (1926-1989) when she retired.
