Five years after the release of “SOLO” (FOCD-9552), a collection of unaccompanied works by Bach and other composers that showcased the violin’s multifaceted appeal, Reiko Watanabe’s grand vision has come to fruition. The “Songs and Dances,” which started in Vienna at the end of the 19th century and makes full use of the famous Del Gesu instrument with its gorgeous tone and outstanding bowing, is a grand picture scroll that gives us a bird’s-eye view of modern Europe. The instrument played by Rei Eguchi was the Steinway used by Horowitz. This unique tone is profound and delicate. It is especially appealing in folk works. The two virtuosos have created a unique collection of masterpieces.
