Drummer Quinn Kirchner, who is expected to lead the jazz scene worldwide in the future following in the footsteps of his fellow countryman Makaya, has released a 2LP set from Astral Spirits, an up-and-coming Texas label that produces heavy free jazz and experimental improvised music, which sold out instantly. The “family jazz” that is so dense and almost solid has become a worldwide trend since Kamasi, and now the time has come for the world to recognize it. The original is of course wonderful, but this man is also quite a curmudgeon, as he has taken up Andrew Hill, Mingus, San-La, and Artur Velokai!
