In this album, Boulez reproduced the details of the orchestration with transparency and precision, and depicted the subtle changes in the accompaniment and rhythmic patterns with a clarity as if he had applied X-rays to the music. He pioneered a completely different interpretation of Debussy’s music. The masterly appearance of Boulez in his later re-recordings for DG was different from that of Boulez in his prime, and his orientation toward precision, which was carried out with a cool-headed passion, has never been surpassed since this recording.
