Description

Michael Garrick’s Late Autumn Sunshine gathers two previously unreleased BBC sessions from the 1970s, capturing the pianist and composer at the height of his powers. Recorded at Maida Vale Studios in 1973 and 1978, these performances highlight Garrick’s gift for blending lyrical composition with modal jazz grooves.

Across eight self-penned pieces, Garrick leads a remarkable cast including vocalist Norma Winstone, trumpeter Henry Lowther, saxophonists Art Themen, Tony Coe and Alan Wakeman, trombonist David Horler, bassists Dave Green and Jeff Clyne, and drummers Trevor Tomkins and John Marshall. The material features early versions of pieces later re-recorded, such as ‘River Running’ and ‘Galilee’, alongside rarities like ‘Robin’s Rest’ and the title track—exclusive to this release.

A central figure in British jazz from the 1960s onward, Garrick’s legacy includes classic albums such as Cold Mountain, The Heart Is a Lotus, and Black Marigolds. Remastered by Caspar Sutton-Jones at Gearbox Records, Late Autumn Sunshine offers a vivid portrait of one of the scene’s most distinctive voices, complete with sleeve notes by Daniel Spicer (Jazzwise, The Wire).
