At the time Haydn (1732-1809) was active, his operas were very popular. However, most of them were performed as holiday attractions in the palace of the Esterházy family, and after Haydn’s death, they never entered the repertoire of the opera house and inevitably remained buried in history for a long time. Only recently have the complete works been performed more often, but there are still many that are not well known. The titles of the overtures are fascinating. I would love to hear (or see) “The World of the Moon” and “The Advice of the Gods” in their entirety. The overtures are in symphony form (in three or four movements), as was customary in those days, so you can enjoy them as a single symphony.Naxos Japan
