Description
Now-Again presents Free Your Mind, the complete collected works of Dayton, Ohio outfit Record Player — a treasure trove of unreleased disco and boogie recorded in the late ’70s, now issued in full for the first time.
Formed in the fertile Ohio soul scene, Record Player privately pressed a single 45 on their own Gem City Records imprint in 1979. Though the band had recorded several more tracks and neared a major label deal, their momentum faltered and they disbanded in the early ’80s. Only two songs have seen daylight since, via the long-running Soul Cal series.
Free Your Mind compiles both sides of their elusive 45 alongside never-before-heard recordings, revealing the full scope of their sound — from smooth dancers to rugged funk workouts. The release includes an oversized booklet with detailed liner notes by historian Bret Sjerven, chronicling the group’s story and the vibrant Ohio soul scene that nurtured them.
A must for fans of deep disco and independent soul in the spirit of Luther Davis, Tomorrow’s People, and Split Decision Band.
