Weinberg and Kabalevsky were two composers active in 20th century Russia at about the same time. This album focuses on the concertos of the two composers, performed by Benjamin Schmidt and other soloists. Weinberg’s Violin Concerto is a pummeling, fiery affair, while Kabalevsky’s Cello Concerto begins with a playful atmosphere. These two pieces show the characteristics of each composer. The unusual piece is Kabalevsky’s arrangement of Schubert’s Fantasy in the style of a piano concerto. It is like a romantic film music. Recorded in 2016 by Cornelius Meister (conductor)/Wien Radio Symphony Orchestra.
