Aeneis” by the ancient Roman poet Vergilius. The tragic love story of the Trojan prince and the Carthaginian queen in “Aeneis” is extremely popular, and the Metastasio libretto “The Abandoned Didone,” based on this story, has been set to music by Galuppi, Hasse, Paisiello, and more than 100 other composers. Vinci’s Abandoned Didone, composed for the Teatro delle Dame in Rome and premiered to great acclaim during the 1726 Carnival season, marked the beginning of a fruitful collaboration between Vinci and Metastasio, who, over the next four years, created more than five libretti for Vinci Over the next four years, Metastasio produced no less than five scripts for Vinci. This album is the world’s first live recording of Vinci’s “Abandoned Didone.
