Browell is one of Cuba’s leading guitar music composers. He composed many concertos for guitar as well as solo works, and his tenth concerto, “Book of Signs,” was written for two guitars, making it Browell’s first “double concerto. The first movement is a variation on a theme by Beethoven, but the melody and the sound of the orchestral parts are all complex and have a modern aspect. The second movement begins with romantic music based on a famous Beatles’ song. The third movement is a joyful and lively movement with joyful ideas derived from Cuban dances. A little later in his generation than Browell, Bellinati’s work is a new work commissioned by the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 2011. It is a gorgeous piece that combines improvisational melodies and traditional Brazilian dances. Both are world premiere recordings.Naxos Japan
