Description
:
A memorable 2016 ECM first leader work by the charismatic Tel Aviv-born trumpeter. A jazz quartet work with all Cohen’s originals. (Tenor saxophone also joins on a few tracks.) Dedicated to the memory of Avishai’s father David, the work looks back on the last days of his life with grace and restraint. Avishai’s gentle muted trumpet sets the emotional tone of the music at the beginning of the album, which unfolds as the members explore its meaning. The creative solos of Israeli pianist Yonatan Avishai, whom Cohen calls “Brother,” the elegant support of bassist Eric Rivis throughout, and the shades of color from the sensitive modernist saxophonist Bill McHenry are all worth listening to.
