This is a collection of responsories composed by Di Lasso (Lassus) in about 1580 for the Holy Week of the chapel at the court of Albrecht V, Duke of Bavaria, who was said to have been his employer at the time. The texts are sung alternately by a soloist and a chorus, and adhere to the restrictions of the Council of Triant, which had been heated up until a short time before (e.g., “No music should be written whose lyrics are inaudible”). This masterpiece, with its exquisite musical depiction of the Easter story and human tragedy, is performed in the latest comparative edition of 2017.Naxos Japan
