Description

Tilaye Gebre stands as one of Ethiopia’s most influential saxophonists, a central figure in Addis Ababa’s fertile musical landscape during the 1970s. A founding member of the Equators, later the Dahlak Band, he helped define the sound of hotel residencies that blended rhythm and blues, soul, funk, and contemporary Ethiopian styles. His arrangements and performances were key to records by artists including Aster Aweke, Mahmoud Ahmed, Tilahun Gessesse, and Muluken Melesse, placing him at the heart of a scene where a small group of musicians shaped an entire culture.

Educated at the Haile Selassie First Theatre in Addis Ababa, Tilaye was among a select few able to study music full-time, which positioned him for the prolific period that followed. With the Dahlak Band, he secured a residency at the Ghion Hotel, developing a distinctive approach rooted in live performance and one-take recordings. His arranging work on Muluken Melesse’s first solo album exemplifies his role in shaping Ethiopian popular music during a turbulent era.

After touring with the Walias Band, Tilaye remained in the United States, performing internationally and further enhancing his reputation. His legacy as musician and arranger continues to resonate, with rare recordings now rediscovered and celebrated decades later.
