Description

Formed in the late 1970s in Marsberg, Germany, Green Cosmos emerged without the support of a local jazz scene, instead drawing inspiration from John Coltrane’s spiritual intensity, world music traditions, free jazz and Indian classical music. Morgenmusiken captures a crucial point in the quartet’s development, stepping away from the more ballad-led feel of their debut Abendmusiken and into a looser, more contemplative space.

The album brings together seven previously unreleased pieces built around the group’s idea of “live compositions”. Sessions often began in silence or meditation before slowly unfolding into collective improvisations, allowing sound to emerge naturally rather than be imposed. The core lineup of Michael Boxberger (saxophone), Benny Düring (piano), and twin brothers Alfred and Ulrich Franke on rhythm developed an almost instinctive interplay, frequently described as telepathic.

Joined here by sitar player Narayan Govande, Green Cosmos balance freedom with restraint, using space and quiet as active musical elements. Guided by the belief that a single note can carry more weight than excess, Morgenmusiken offers a deeply focused listening experience that feels both expansive and timeless.
